About

SNAKES

A lot of people initially have a bad perception of snakes. Snakes carry a negative stereotype with them. The portrayal of snakes in the media is detrimental to snakes for they are often portrayed as aggressive and malicious creatures (Ellerbeck,2011). This reputation only promotes a fear of these animals, and this fear helps fuel an unjust persecution of snakes. Let’s look below for 5 Misconceptions, together with their corrections.

Snakes are sent by the devil

Snakes are just another type reptile from the animal kingdom. They have no evil mystical powers.

Snakes are aggressive to humans

Experienced snake handlers do not define snakes as aggressive, saying snakes attack when they are desperate starved or provoked.

Snakes are super fast

Lateral undulation gives the illusion that snakes travel faster than they really do. Only a few snakes are able to travel over 6mph

Snakes are venomous

No snakes are poisonous. Some, and not all snakes are venomous.

Snakes prey on humans

Snakes often do not view people as prey, but instead as predators. When confronted by a human, they will more likely flee than attack.
